HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRADY!!!

Baby Grady turned a year old on November 27, 2007!  I cannot believe how fast the time has gone.  It is really exciting and fun in many ways - to see all that he can do now and the little person he has become.  But it is also sad to know that his first year has passed.  Just a year ago we were holding this tiny person in our arms, wondering who he would become.  And now we have a pretty good idea of the kind of guy he is.  He is such a warm, happy, and affectionate baby.  He loves people and welcomes everyone with a smile (and sometimes even a hug!).  He is funny, mischievous, silly, and wild.  He is super energetic and interested in EVERYTHING.  He is confident, outgoing, and such a ham.  Sometimes I think he might become an actor.  But then I watch how he examines toys - flipping them over to see how they are put together - and I am sure he will be an engineer like his dad.  Either way, I am so excited to continue on this journey and watch him become his own little baby-guy.  Because he may be on his way to becoming a "guy", but he will certainly always be MY baby!

Some things don't change so much.  Here he is a year ago:

And a couple days ago:

He really still looks so much the same, even though he has obviously changed a lot too.

So what are Grady's stats at one year?  He just visited the doctor today, and he was 20 pound, 12 ounces (25th percentile) and 30.5 inches (75th percentile).  He is WALKING (that really started on his birthday - about 10 pretty shaky steps at a time) - he is so so proud of himself.  He is also clapping now and loves to do it all the time.  Usually if you say "YAAY!" he will clap wildly and smile.  He likes to dance and has several sweet baby dance moves.  He also has 11 teeth now (2 new molars in the past 5 days).  He gives great hugs, tries to kiss, and loves to say "MAMAMAMA!" and "DADADADA!" over and over.  I think he is also saying "more" in his highchair.  Basically, he is the cutest, smartest, most fun baby ever.  No, I am NOT biased

OK - on to pictures!

Before Grady's birthday we headed up to Massachusetts to visit family, celebrate Thanksgiving, and have a big party for G.  When we arrived in Massachusetts after a LONG drive and a stay in a hotel (through which Grady was very good), Grandma Conte had a house full of toys!  She borrowed a bunch of things for Grady's visit.  Here he is in a zoo playyard:

Having a snack on Thanksgiving morning:

He loved this little mailbox (OK - I loved it more).  I want one for our house now!

Grandma Conte is crazy, so she also borrowed a play set for the yard.  Thanksgiving was a beautiful day, so we played outside for a while in the morning.

playing in the leaves:

That evening we went to dinner at the Wayside Inn.  Unfortunately, Grady didn't quite hold out for all of dinner, but he was very happy early on.  He seemed to get the idea of eating a lot and really enjoyed the cranberry sauce.

Friday morning, checking out girfts from Grandma Conte and Papa G.

Friday evening - visiting with Grandma and Grandpa Schmidt:

And having a snack with Grandma C.

Checking out his new wheels!  Grandma and Pa Conte got him a Power Wheels Kawasaki!

Checking the tires:

And riding it on Saturday morning.  It was so funny because I thought he would be too small to do it.  But he just hopped on, pushed the big button, and took off!

"OK Dad, show me how I do this"

"Push THIS button?"

"And I'm off!"

And some great video - at first Dad helps him steer, but then he is on his own!

Grady also got his first haircut on Saturday morning.  He really needed it in back and above his ears.  We took him to Scizzors, and he did great!  He didn't cry, and he actually sat relatively still.  He looks so cute with his big kid haircut.

Saturday was also party day!  Grady had a nice nap, got all dressed in his farmer duds, and headed over to his party.  He was in a great mood and seemed to really enjoy it.

This ball was a big hit:

flirting with Miss Natalie:

SO excited about his peas.  He also tried cornbread and mac and cheese:

Not sitting very still for a picture with Derek:

After singing "Happy Birthday" and blowing out the candle (with Mom's help), I let him dig in:

Then he REALLY got messy!

"Am I really allowed to do this?"

"YUM - the candle!"

Grady opened a few gifts at his party too.

Unfortunately, we had to head back to Virginia on Sunday morning.  Here he is on Sunday, getting ready to go for a walk before we left:

On Grady's actual birthday he opened gifts from Mom and Dad, had his birthday pictures done (plus some family pictures), and played a lot. He was in a fabulous mood.  It was as if he knew it was his special day.

playing in the morning:

"Hmmmmm... what to play with next?"

He LOVES his playcube that Momma picked out!

"YAAAY for the play cube!"

We got some sandwiches from a deli for lunch and they had pickles.  So, as usual, Grady got mine.  He loves pickles.

He also had some animal crackers:

He seriously could not get enough of the play cube:

He also REALLY likes the Busy Ball Popper from Great-Aunt Cindy and fam.  He has figured out how to start it himself, and he will just do it OVER and OVER.

Another favorite was the Little People Farm from Great-Grandma:

And finally, a walking video!  He started to really take more steps on his birthday.  The funny thing is, in the few days since then he has already improved a ton.  I have some newer videos that I will post soon that show his progress.

Grady walking!
